Adventures in Beekeeping: The Beginning

Fresh HoneybeesSince we have a field of Sunflowers.. the next logical step was to get bees too.. I have always loved bees.. while the rest of the kids were jumping rope, or swinging off the monkey bars in the schoolyard, I was sitting next to the one dandelion, who struggled to bloom through the cracks in the pavement, waiting for a bee to come along, so I could scoop her up on my hand to show all my classmates.

I could have ordered bees through a local beekeeper to pollinate my fields.. but that`s no fun.. not for a bee lover like me.. I wanted to have my own bees… and a certificate that says I’m a Keeper.   A few years ago, I took The Modern Beekeeper course through Dalhousie University.. and it was a ton of fun… if you like being covered head to toe in bees.. which I do. Here are my  Photos from Bee School:

The Honey Bees must have liked the idea, because while I was at Bee School, a swarm of bees took up residence next to my barn… Although..as they flew from blossom to blossom, i did tell them, if they moved in we would give them a beautiful home filled with lots of flowers..

Hello Bees

Click here to read about How I caught my Swarm as posted on Nova Scotia Bees.

While I might have learned a bunch at Bee School, a lot of it was in the classroom. I needed some real hands on experience ..  right around the same time Joe & Michelle from Scotian Bee Honey moved in to our area.. which worked out just perfect.  The best way to learn is by doing.. so when i`m not lost in a field of Sunflowers, or picking blossoms to turn into Jelly, we exchange knowledge for help.

scotian bee productsIf you were at the Maze this summer , you might have seen their Beehives, or purchased some of their yummy honey.. or even strolled by one of their Honey Bees busy pollinating our Sunflowers.

Want to learn more about bees? Become a Beekeeper yourself? Take a look at the Modern Beekeeper being offered by Dalhousie.  Want something with a little less commitment, so you can test the beekeeping water with your toes? Check out Scotian Bee Honey‘s upcoming Bee School this weekend.. or sign up for one of their one day workshops over the Summer… So very worth it.. and so is the Honey.
