The Late
Bloomers
Late September to early October ยท By appointment only
After the sunflowers fade and the fields begin to rest, something quietly unexpected happens on the hill. One or two blooms open โ late, unhurried, and entirely on their own terms โ just as the valley below catches fire with fall colour.
This is the quietest visit of the season. We’re in the middle of harvesting our gardens, the fields are winding down, and the farm is moving into a different rhythm entirely. But the hill is extraordinary right now โ the kind of view that stops you mid-step and makes you forget what you were doing.
The last real warmth of summer before fall settles in for good.
The late bloomers open when they’re ready โ not on a schedule, not to a crowd. Just quietly, in the last warm light of the season, on a hill overlooking a river that’s been here longer than any of us. It’s the kind of moment that feels like it was put there just for whoever happened to show up that day.
The flowers aren’t the whole story anymore.
It’s the light on the water. The colour in the trees.
The feeling that summer is leaving slowly, and beautifully.
Because we’re busy harvesting our gardens at this time of year, visits to the Late Bloomers are by appointment. Send us a message to arrange your visit โ we’ll confirm the timing and make sure the hill is ready for you. Small groups and private visits welcome.
The last weekend in September and the first in October are some of the best days of the year to be driving in Hants County. The route from the farm winds through apple orchards, pumpkin fields, and a valley that’s pulling out all the stops before winter arrives.
Windsor area ยท Apple & pear picking, farm stand
One of the finest fall outings in the valley โ pick apples straight from the trees, load up at the farm stand with cider, baked goods, jams, and whatever else looks good on the way home.
Windsor ยท Home of the world-record Atlantic Giant pumpkin
Fall in Windsor means pumpkins โ and not just any pumpkins. This is where the legendary Atlantic Giant was developed. A wonderfully unique stop at harvest time, especially with kids.
Upper Falmouth ยท Trees, shrubs, perennials & native plants
Fall is one of the best times to plant, and Baldwin’s is one of the best places to do it โ five acres of beautifully grown trees, shrubs, ornamental grasses, and native plants to wander through at the end of the season.
Avondale ยท Estate winery overlooking the valley
A peaceful place to settle in at the end of the afternoon โ with long views over the same river valley you began on this morning. Harvest season at a valley winery is something special.
Hants County ยท Gentle animals & open farm space
A soft, gentle landing at the end of a full fall day โ farm animals, open space, and that particular kind of quiet that comes from being around creatures who aren’t in any hurry either.
