Adventures in Beekeeping: The Honeymoon

Last Thursday, Ken and I had the opportunity to pick up packages of Bees for Scotian Bee Honey

Ken & I were married almost two years ago, in our very own field of Sunflowers… But as we were busy renovating our farmhouse, raising young children, and growing sunflowers, we went straight into life after our wedding… skipping the Honeymoon.. we didn’t even take a day off.. as we opened the maze the same day we were wed.  We were meaning to take a little trip somewhere.. just the two of us.. once the maze had ended for the season, the gardens were harvested, and the house was finished.. It never happened.. Our To-Do list grew as the maze grew larger, as did the list for the old farmhouse (like plastering the walls, only to have a pipe break and have to do it all over) and with both little ones starting school, our “honeymoon” found it’s way to the bottom of the list.. until Thursday.

When we arrived at the place we were to pick up the bees, we discovered the bees were 5 hours behind schedule.. and we could either hang around in the middle of nowhere for 5 hour, where the farmer who owned the place was itching to put us to work.. or we could go get lost, and finally have ourselves a little tiny 5 hour Honeymoon Stay-cation in Prince Edward Island… because of all the Honeymoon destinations in the world.. PEI has got to be one of the best.. (Other than Nova Scotia… Of course.)

We made a Beeline to Vesey’s  to pick up our potato seed for the garden.. I’d say taking the Scenic Route.. but which way isn’t scenic.. it’s all so very pretty. It’s PEI.. Surrounded by Ocean, beaches, and that beautiful red sandy soil…  Ken and I talked about the red dirt and how great it looked to grow in for most of the trip.. Ah.. gardener’s.. given time to spend on a honeymoon, and we spend it on seeds and soil..

We made it back just in time to pick up the bees and head home to the girls, with a few stops on the way to drop off to a few happy beekeepers, eager to get their bees into their hives.

It was a beautiful trip.. and when your eating your apple, give a little thanks to the bees and beekeepers who helped make it happen. 🙂
